BASKETBALL POSITIONS
Guards: Two guards – the point guard (or 1-guard) and the shooting guard (or 2-guard) form the back court. The point guard is generally the leader of the team on the court, doing most of the ball handling and setting up plays through superb passing skills. The shooting guard is generally a good ball handler with excellent shooting skills.
Forwards: The small forward (3 player) is usually a strong scorer near and away from the basket. He is called on to rebound, handle the ball, and pass. Players like Larry Bird, Scottie Pippon, and Grant Hill combine this talents and have often serve as a second point guard on the floor. The power forward (4 player) is big and strong, concentrating primarily on defence and rebounding. Though he is smaller than most power forwards, Dennis Rodman combines the defensive and rebounding skills of the ideal power forward.
The center (5 player) is usually the tallest player on the team and serves as the corner stone of most set plays. Centers use their height advantage to score over other players and rebound.
This are general characteristics, with some players specializing in a particular facet of the game and others transcending expectations of their position.
